Nomen Est Omen - Gypsyjazzviolin

'Nomen Est Omen' (Latijn: een naam is een voorteken) is maar de vraag als je luistert naar The RoseRoomSwing, mijn gipsyswing-combo. De naam van de band komt van de gelijknamige jazzstandard 'The Rose Room' waarvan de tekst rozengeur en manenschijn doet vermoeden. Niets is minder waar. Zoals je kan horen, gaat het voor The RoseRoomSwing om hand en om tand. Naast mijn luchtig geviolier, hoor je nog twee gitaren en een contrabas, en, een drummer waar geen haar aan was. Ellen De Vlam, buikdanseres van dienst, verzorgde de zills. 'Nomen Est Omen' maakt deel uit van het nieuwe album van The RoseRoomSwing, tezamen met elf andere traditionele gipsynummers...

'Nomen Est Omen' (Latin: a name is a sign) is only the question if one listens to The RoseRoomSwing, my gypsyswing-combo. The bandname refers to the eponymous jazzstandard 'The Rose Room' of which the text is rosy. Nothing could be further from the truth. As you can hear, The RoseRoomSwing plays tooth and nail. Besides my flying fiddle, you can hear two guitars and a double bass, a drummer, a voice and a blaze. Ellen De Vlam, bellydancer, recorded the zills. 'Nomen Est Omen' is part of a new album of The RoseRoomSwing, together with eleven other traditional gypgsy-instrumentals...

Andries Boone & Andries Baele

Op een ochtend in april 2013 belde Andries Boone, bekend van The Ballroomquartet, me op om een opname te maken. Ik mocht de gipsy jazzviool verzorgen bij het lied over de legendarische Leuvense wielrenner 'Poeske Scherens'. Gudrun Roos verzorgde de leuke jazzstem. Het lied maakt deel uit van het album 'Iet Me Ziel', een heuse soundtrack over Leuven. Gemaakt door muzikanten uit Leuven. Ik beluisterde de cd op een stereo-installatie, in de auto en met de hoofdtelefoon. Het is meeslepend, ontroerend en groots.

One morning in april 2013, Andries Boone, member of The Ballroomquartet, phoned me to make a recording. I was invited to play the gipsy jazzviolin on a song about the legendary cyclist 'Poeske Scherens'. Gudrun Roos took care of the funny jazzvoice. The song is part an album called 'Iet Me Ziel' (= Dutch, meaning: 'Something With Soul'), a soundtrack about the Belgian city of Leuven. Made by musicians from Leuven. I listened to the cd on a stereo, in the car and with my headphone. It finds out to be vibrant, touching and grand.

Electric Violin in a Theatre Play

Alle klanken werden gecreëerd met viool - All sounds were created with violin.

In het theaterstuk 'Vergaan' laat ik me helemaal gaan met mijn elektrische viool, fraaie effecten en een loopstation. Naast eigen werk, improvisaties en bestaande composities (o.a. Gangnam Style, Che Gelida, ...) tover ik een dansfeest, een koffiezetapparaat, de donder en de regen, een computer(spel), een ziekenwagen, een deurbel, de wind, de zee, een motor, een vliegtuig, etc. uit mijn GX700 en RC30. Door de boxen laat ik de bassen, de delays en alle andere klanken van links naar rechts passeren en telkens weer bereikt de opeenstapeling van de verschillende lagen een climax. In de context van het verhaal over twee broers die 'vergaan' ('ver' en 'gaan') leiden zowel de muziek als de tekst iedere keer weer tot extreme climaxen. 'Vergaan' is een metafysisch detectiveverhaal dat haar toeschouwer op het verkeerde spoor zet. Op het einde wordt alles duidelijk...

In the theatre-play 'Vergaan' (Dutch spoken) I let myself entirely go, together with my electric violin, fine effects and a loopstation. Alongside my own work, improvisations and existing compositions (e.g. Gangnam Style, Che Gelida, ...) I cast a party, a coffee maker, thunder and rain, a computer(game), an ambulance, a doorbell, the blowing wind, the sea, a motor, a plane, etc. out of my GX700 and RC30. Through the boxes I make the basses, the delays and all other sounds swing from left to right. Every time the accumulation of different layers reaches a climax. In the context of the story about two brothers who 'perish' or 'go far' (both meaning 'vergaan') the music and the words lead continually to extreme climaxes. 'Vergaan' is a metafysical detective that puts her spectator on the wrong track. At the end everything becomes clear...

Cinematic Violin

Als violist had ik van kinds af al een passie voor filmmuziek. Een violist - maar ook een "melodische" jazzmusicus - is met 'melodie' bezig, zich afvragend: hoe maak je mooie, zotte, virtuoze, effectieve muzikale zinnen? Met mijn nieuwe productie ga ik de wondere wereld van de bioscoop binnen en zet er geschiedenisgewijs de beste melodieën in een creatieve setting. Je mag je verwachten aan blockbusters, filmklassiekers, tv-series, oscarwinnaars in een verhalend geheel met improvaties, songs, virtuositeit en humor ;°)

As violinist in his childhood I had a passion for soundtracks. A violinist - but also a "melodic" jazzmusician - is occupied by 'melody', thinking by himself: how can I make a beautiful, crazy, virtuose, effective musical  phrasings? With my new production I'll step into the amazing world of cinema and unwind - chronological - the best melodies in a creative setting. You may expect blockbusters, classics, tv-series, oscarwinners in a story-telling concept amongst improvisations, songs, virtuosity and humor 8°)

A Funky Bluegrass Violin

De compositie 'Koentry' komt van de muziekstijl 'Country' en schudde ik spontaan uit de mouwen toen ik thuis aan het experimenteren was met een 'humanizer'. Dit gitaareffect deed me denken aan de cowboys en dus aan Bluegrass. Met mijn wereldmuziekensemble 'Les Yeux Bleus Live' liet ik het effect weg en krijg je tweemaal een funky Bluegrassviool voorgeschoteld:

The composition 'Koentry' comes from the musicstyle 'Country'. I knocked the tune off when I was experimenting at home with a 'humanizer'. This guitareffect reminded me of cowboys and so of Bluegrass. Playing with my worldmusicensemble 'Les Yeux Bleus Live' I left the effect out en we hear a funky Bluegrassviolin twice:
